As a gesture of hailing the Diamond Jubilee Independence Day, the five-storey annexe of Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital Yangon was inaugurated in Kyimyindine Township of Yangon Region this morning, and State Administration Council Vice Chairman Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win pressed the button to open the building.

Also present at the ceremony were Union ministers, the chief minister of Yangon Region, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, the commander of Yangon Command, deputy ministers, region ministers, departmental heads, retired medical professionals, health staff and other invited guests.

First, Union Minister for Health Prof Dr Thet Khaing Win, Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, the commander of Yangon Command and the director general of the Medical Services Department cut the ribbon to open the annexe.

The Vice-Senior General pressed the button to unveil the signboard of new five-storey annexe.

The Vice-Senior General and party sprinkled scented water on the signboard and posed for documentary photos.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Senior General said that the State Administration Council in its tenure of serving the duties emphasizes peace and stability of socio-economy, unity and development of the State and the people as much as it can. In line with the guidance of Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing “Nothing is important than life of human”, as the Ministry of Health is carrying out public health care services as a main duty, everybody can see that prevention, control and treatment of COVID-19 activities were undertaken during the worst period of third and fourth waves of disease infection with manpower and material power.

Turning out the well-versed human resources plays a key role in building the Union based on democracy and federalism in order to strengthen the genuine,disciplined-flourishing multiparty democratic system for the State. To do so, all need to have good health. Only when they are healthy will they be fit. If so, they can efficiently pursue necessary technologies and knowledge for their lives, contributing to raising interests of the State and themselves. Hence, the Vice-Senior General urged them to continue systematic management for healthcare services.

Due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the world as of 2020, all global countries faced losses, and working process of economic, education and medical treatment delayed in outbreak of the pandemic. Momentum of health sector faced delay. At present, as COVID-19 pandemic can be controlled to some extent, an emphasis must be placed on regular healthcare services, treatment, research and medical education at full capacity in the health sector which delayed in the remedy of loss triggered by the COVID-19 through possible ways and means. As the government formed more districts for smooth administration and management of region and state governments, 48 district level Department of Medical Services were allowed to be formed under the Ministry of Health.

So, if systematic supervision is undertaken over them, they can provide more healthcare services to the people in the larger arena. There are 1,178 people’s hospitals under the Ministry of Health, 83 of which are located in Yangon Region. Due to population density and better transport facility, 10 central level specialty hospitals which can accept referral of patients are allowed to provide treatments to the patients. In its tenure, the State Administration Council opened and extended more hospital buildings. At Webagi Specialty Hospital in Yangon, 100-bed new hospital was upgraded with international level medical wards to treat patients for infectious diseases including COVID-19. Recently, the nine-storey building of Pathein General Hospital was built for providing treatments to patients for their convenience.

Based on the history of the hospital, the Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital-Yangon was established as Home for the Disabled and Leprosy in 1895 and designated as orthopaedic hospital in 1976.

It was upgraded to the 300-bed hospital in January 2012 to provide orthopaedic treatments such as waist surgical treatment, detailed surgical treatment of hands, substitution of knee and thigh and general orthopaedic treatments to the patients. The government appoints new assistant doctors and new nurses for ensuring full strength of health staff with collaboration of the medical technicians from the Ministry of Defence, opens medical technological courses and nurse-aid courses, conduct postgraduate courses for increasing number of specialist doctors.

Moreover, the government constructs new buildings of hospitals and staff housings with cash allowances for staff.

The Vice-Senior General thanked the Ministries of Health and Construction, Yangon Region government, the medical superintendent of the hospital and health staff for their efforts to carry out the construction of the building in time meeting the set standards. The Vice-Senior General urged all to strive for the hospital as the public reliable one as of the opening ceremony and to systematically maintain the building, health services and environs for long term existence with the family spirit.

The director general of the Construction Special Task Force (1) handed over the documents of the building to the director general of the Department of Medical Services. The Vice-Senior General accepted the commemorative gift presented by Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win. Rector of the Yangon General Hospital Dr Thida Hla spoke words of thanks.

Later, the Vice-Senior General and party visited the five-storey annexe.
